Sinai offers adults a variety of learning opportunities, including Beit Midrash seminars, Scholar in Residence Weekends, Bible Study, Lunch and Learn, and many forms of Torah Study. Some sessions are facilitated by clergy and staff, while others are led by congregants, professionals, or visiting scholars.

Adults choosing to enrich their knowledge of Torah and the prayer book through the study of Hebrew will find a class suited to their needs. For more information, please contact Rabbi David Cohen at rabbi@congregationsinai.org.

A highlight of our lifelong learning opportunities is Sinai’s Adult B’nei Mitzvah program, which guides learners on a path of study designed to build a foundation of Jewish learning and practice. The two-year program, open to all members regardless of knowledge, culminates in a formal service in which learners lead the service, read or chant from the Torah, and share the experience of their journey with our community.

What Do We Talk About When We Talk About Israel and Palestine? My visit to the West Bank and Israel with “Clergy United4 Peace”

I am traveling to Israel and the West Bank in early November, along with an interfaith group of clergy from both Milwaukee and around the country. We’ll visit sites of Jewish interest and places where Christians walk in Jesus’s footsteps. We’ll spend a good deal of time in the occupied territories meeting with Jews and Arabs. Despite the years I lived in Israel, I’ve never participated in a trip like this. Christian and Jewish clergy will be looking at Israel through each others’ eyes. I anticipate the trip will be transformative for all the participants. I look forward to sharing what I learned with you. I’ll be using multi-media created during the trip as well as other media resources during our
classes.

Bikkur Cholim - Understanding and Training of How to be a Visitor to Those in Need

Do you question what to say or do when visiting someone in need? How could you feel more comfortable? Congregation Sinai is growing our Chesed program by offering a Bikkur Cholim (Volunteer Visitor) training led by Rabbinic Pastor Aggie Goldenholz. Learn what the sacred texts teach about visiting the sick, how Jewish law honors the dignity of each person and how to create opportunities for making each visit a sacred encounter. Together we will learn about the Jewish laws of visiting the sick, making visits a part of your spiritual practice, how to become comfortable being a friendly visitor, and how you can be a support to Congregation Sinai by visiting congregants that are homebound, in nursing homes or hospitals.

Tawdry Talmudic Tales

The Talmud is an incredible collection of stories, laws, debates, and discussions reflecting Jewish life in the first half of the first millennium. Some of the tales, though, present a surprising glimpse into the real life of the talmudic figures: brave, vengeful, intelligent, and obscene. Come learn with Rabbi Steigmann some of the stories that you otherwise might never hear from the Talmud, what they mean, and what they teach us. No Talmud back-ground is necessary, and anyone (age appropriate) is welcome.
