One of the most brilliant intellectual and artistic accomplishments of the Jewish People is the Narrative Midrash: the ancient form of Biblical interpretation in story form that flourished particularly from the most ancient Rabbinic period to the Twelfth Century. Midrashim ask questions of the original text. Why? Or . . . why not? How? Throughout the centuries, artists of all media have used their art to interpret the same stories that engaged the ancient rabbis. Together, we will examine the original Biblical texts, the classic Midrashic works that help us understand those texts, and more modern works of art the extend those interpretations into modernity.
