Rabbi David B. Cohen
Innovation in education, profound engagement in social Justice, leadership, scholarship, and a palpable love of Jewish life are hallmarks of Rabbi David Cohen’s rabbinate. As the rabbi of Congregation Sinai, he serves a congregation noted for its interfaith partnerships, inclusive atmosphere, innovative educational programming and intimate setting.
Rabbi Cohen is known throughout Milwaukee for his erudition, personal warmth, deep humanity, quick wit, and humor. He is an engaging teacher who makes scholarship accessible and captivating.
Active in the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), Rabbi Cohen has served in a number of leadership roles currently including the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) Ethics Process Review Committee and the CCAR/URJ Joint Commission on Social Action. Internationally, he is a Senior Rabbinic Fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. Locally, Rabbi Cohen has served as the president of the Wisconsin Council of Rabbis, and is active in Greater Milwaukee Faith Voices for Justice and Voces de la Frontera, on issues surrounding immigration.
Rabbi Cohen has been the spiritual leader of Congregation Sinai since 1996. He was ordained at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, where he received awards for academic distinction, sermon qualityand service to small congregations. An honors graduate of Brandeis University, he also holds a Masters Degree in Education from Stanford University. Before coming to Congregation Sinai, Rabbi Cohen was Associate Rabbi of Congregation Beth Am in Palo Alto, California. Prior to rabbinical school, Rabbi Cohen worked several years in Jerusalem, coordinating long-term youth programs for the reform movement. Rabbi Cohen and Julie are proud parents to two sets of adult twins.
